About This Waterfall
The North Saskatchewan River flows through a series of rather impressive slot canyons near its headwaters at the north end of Banff National Park. The first such canyon below its source glacier is found just upstream from the so-called Big Bend along the Icefields Parkway, and harbors two significant waterfalls; the lower of the two being this waterfall. Here, the river plunges over back-to-back drops of 27 and 24 feet respectively, each step taking the form of a nearly vertical plunge which spreads outward slightly as it falls. Because of how the canyon constricts and bends around the falls, both tiers cannot be seen clearly in conjunction but each can be clearly viewed individually. Just upstream from the falls the river flows through scenic a section of less-crooked narrows in the canyon. We have found no documented names for this set of falls, so following our naming convention for the next waterfall downstream along the river, we've oped to simply name it for the river. The "Middle" designation is necessary to distinguish it from the uppermost falls within the same canyon complex, which looks to be found about a half-kilometer further upstream.
