About This Waterfall

In the city of Egilsstaðir, turn off Highway 1 on to Route 92 where signs point to Seyðisfjörður and Reyðarfjörður. Follow Route 92 for 8-1/2km and then turn left onto Route 953. Follow Route 953 for another 16-1/2km to where the a sign notes Klifbrekkufossar to the right of the road, then continue another half kilometer to where the falls can be seen on the opposite side of the valley, descending down the narrow chasm - the depth of which obstructs the falls from view until you are directly across from it.Aside from Klifbrekkufossar, the main waterfall at the head of the Mjólfjörður, there are literally dozens of smaller streams which flume, plunge, and cascade hundreds of feet down the cliffs into the fjord on either side of Klifbrekkufossar. Many of these waterfalls are likely significant enough to warrant inclusion in this database, but unfortunately we didn't have enough time to thoroughly document all of them. One in particular however which caught our eye was Prestagilsfoss, located just one drainage down the valley from Klifbrekkufossar itself. The stream drains from a small basin on the edge of the valley which flumes into a deep, narrow canyon in a series of at least five plunging and horsetail type falls which drop somewhere around 160 meters (525 feet) in all, the single largest of which is a nearly free-falling drop of at least 60 meters (200 feet). The three lower-most steps can be clearly seen from the road, while the upper two are partially obscured by the shape of the canyon but portions are visible nonetheless. Unfortunately the falls were too distant for us to take an accurate measurement of its height, and we lacked time to get close enough to do just that, but the topographic data available through the National Land Survey of Iceland seems to suggest that a height of over 150 meters (500 feet), but not more than 180 meters (600 feet) is likely - however it is possible that it may in fact be significantly taller than we have estimated.
