Red Rock Falls

Red Rock Falls are best seen from just south of Monte Cristo Lake along the Mountain Loop Highway, about 2 miles south of Barlow Pass. There are several informal campsites along the lake side of the road where the falls can be seen through the trees.Red Rock Falls occurs along an unnamed, unmapped seasonal stream that flows down a gully on the south arm of Twin Peaks. The stream seems to retain flow into late June or early July depending on the season's snowpack, but likely runs dry by September. The falls cascade at least 700 feet down the side of the mountain, possibly more, but I haven't been able to get an accurate measurement because its out of range of my rangefinder.The waterfall has no official name. According to Harry Majors' book "The Monte Cristo Area", the cliffs the falls drop over were known by the Sauk Indians as "Da-Lichkuls", which roughly translated to "Red or Blood-colored cliffs". This name stems from the fact that Elk hunts would be held in the area where the herds were forced up against the cliffs to waiting hunters. Since the Sauk dialect is not so easy to pronouce, I felt "Red Rock" was an acceptably watered down version.
