About This Waterfall

Skoonichuk Falls is the fourth major waterfall along Eagle Creek one encounters when hiking upstream along the Eagle Creek Trail. The falls drop a total of 48 feet in two steps, first dropping 32 feet into an alcove via a funnel-like channel in the bedrock, and then rolling another 16 feet over a broad uniform ledge into a large pool below. The falls are flanked on the east by a lofty cliff which towers up to 400 feet above the base of the falls and provides ample shade from the sun during the first half of the day. Located near the top of the falls is one of the numerous camp areas along the Eagle Creek Trail, as well as easy access to views looking right down the gullet of the falls (use caution on the slick rocks around the falls). The exact meaning of the name of the falls eludes me, but its surely of Chinook origin. Chuck or Chuk means Water, and various derivations of Skook- refer to some sort of evil, creature or spirit of sorts, so the meaning likely lies somewhere thereabouts.
