About This Spring

## Overview Slab City Hot Springs is a free, open-access geothermal soaking spot located in the heart of Slab City — the famous off-grid, squatter community in the Southern California desert near Niland. Often referred to as "The Last Free Place in America," Slab City sits on the abandoned concrete slabs of the former Camp Dunlap, a World War II–era Marine Corps training base. The hot springs here are fed by geothermal activity associated with the Salton Sea geothermal field, one of the most active geothermal zones in the western United States. The hot springs consist of several hand-built soaking pools that have been constructed and maintained over the years by Slab City residents and visitors. The pools vary in temperature, with some reported to be quite hot — often exceeding 100°F (38°C) — while others are cooler and more comfortable for extended soaking. The mineral-rich water surfaces naturally from underground, and the pools have a rustic, DIY character that reflects the independent spirit of the Slab City community. Slab City itself is located on the eastern shore of the Salton Sea in Imperial County, California, about 60 miles north of the Mexican border. The area is known for its extreme desert climate, with summer temperatures frequently surpassing 110°F (43°C). The best time to visit the hot springs is during the cooler months, roughly from October through April, when both the air temperature and the soaking experience are more pleasant. ## Directions 1. From Interstate 10, take the CA-111 South exit toward Niland/Brawley. 2. Continue south on CA-111 for approximately 55 miles until you reach the small town of Niland. 3. In Niland, turn east (left) onto Beal Road. 4. Follow Beal Road east for about 3.5 miles. You will pass Salvation Mountain — a famous folk-art landmark — on your left. 5. Continue past Salvation Mountain into Slab City. The hot springs are located within the community. Look for signs or ask residents for the current location of the soaking pools, as they can shift over time. 6. GPS coordinates: 33.2459833, -115.4768222. Note that cell service is extremely limited in this area, so download offline maps before arriving. ## What to Expect Slab City Hot Springs is an entirely unmanaged, free soaking experience in a remote desert setting. The pools are hand-dug and lined with whatever materials the community has available — expect a raw, improvised setup rather than a polished resort experience. Water temperatures can vary significantly between pools, so test the water before getting in. The surrounding landscape is stark, open desert with sweeping views of the Chocolate Mountains to the east. There are no facilities — no restrooms, no changing rooms, no potable water, and no trash service. Visitors should bring everything they need and pack out all trash. Slab City is home to a small but vibrant community of full-time residents, seasonal snowbirds, and travelers. The culture is welcoming but values respect for the space and its inhabitants. Clothing-optional bathing is common at the hot springs. Nighttime soaking under the desert stars is a popular experience. Be aware that the area is extremely hot in summer and can be cold at night in winter. There is no shade at the springs. Bring plenty of water for drinking, sun protection, and a flashlight if visiting after dark. The nearest services (gas, groceries) are in Niland, about 3.5 miles west.
