About This Waterfall
Smeaton Falls was formerly a series of falls consisting of at least three steps which cascaded down the side of the Niagara Gorge adjacent to what is now the Sir Adam Beck Hydropower Stations. Since the completion of the hydroelectric system and the reservoir above, the drainage for the stream has been effectively destroyed, and the falls no longer exist. The largest drop of the series was said to be 26 meters tall. One source suggests the entire series of falls dropped 88 meters, however as this is effectively the elevation from the top of the gorge to the bottom, it seems unlikely that there was no talus runout given the nature of the bedrock in the area, so its much more likely that the falls were on the order of 40 to 50 meters tall in all.
