About This Waterfall
Smørholefossen is one of two noteable waterfalls located at the end of Vikadalen in Årdal. Topographic maps aren't terribly clear as to exactly how tall the falls are, but based on the lesser-detailed maps available the falls likely drop around 370 meters (1,215 feet), with an initial sheer leap of between 150 and 180 meters, followed by another 200 meters of steep cascades and / or smaller tiers. Smørholefossen is regulated in the same hydroelectric system as nearby Skeidslåfossen, the diversion occurring a short distance upstream from the top of the waterfall. The falls may partially flow during the melt season, and likely for prolonged periods during years with exceptionally heavy winter snow pack, but it appears that the falls are likely to be dry more often than not.
