About This Waterfall
Take Highway 1 to the roundabout in Kirkjubæjarklauster, and exit onto Route 203 toward Geirland (heading north). In another kilometer the road will cross the Stjórn with the falls visible upstream. Parking is afforded in a large pullout just across the bridge. A trail leads past the neighboring camping area to the base of the falls.Stjórnarfoss is a relatively small but very scenic waterfall found just outside of the town of Kirkjubæjarklauster near the Ring Road. The falls consist of two steps; a cascading fall which rumbles 40 feet down an inclined ramp of volcanic rock, and a 38-foot fall which rolls and plunges over the edge of a very oddly formed tongue of basalt, creating a rather symmetrical convex dome-shaped fall. The distance between the upper and lower tiers of the fall is enough that the upper tier is entirely hidden from view when standing at the foot of the falls, and can only be seen when standing further back (near the bridge). This has the affect of making the falls seem a bit less significant than they are in reality.
