About This Waterfall
Systrafoss can be seen from Highway 1 about 1.8km west of the roundabout in Kirkjubæjarklauster. Closer views can be had by continuing to the roundabout in Kirkjubæjarklauster and exiting into town, then following the main road through the town for 1.3km to where it crosses the stream below the falls.Systrafoss is a low volume waterfall found quite literally right behind the town of Kirkjubæjarklaustur, just off the Ring Road along the south side of Iceland. The falls drain from Systravatn, a small lake that may or may not be partially man made (by streams having been diverted into the basin), and due to the small volume of water which seems to feed into the lake, the falls in turn do not flow consistently throughout the year and are seen at their best after periods of prolonged rain. The falls slide down an inclined pitch of bedrock, forming side-by-side ribbons of water before crashing into moss covered boulders and then tumbling down more cascades in a considerably more chaotic nature. We were not able to obtain survey data of the falls due to time constraints, but the height of the entire formation is likely in the range of 200-250 feet, with the primary sliding portion of the falls accounting for perhaps 150 feet of that.
