About This Waterfall
From the town of Djúpivogur follow Highway 1 east / north towards Egilsstaðir for 14.6km to the bridge over the Fossá, then turn left onto a gravel road marking Eyjólfsstaðir. The road skirts a cliff then climbs up a short steep hill and makes a sharp bend to the right. Park immediately past the bend and locate the gated path at the apex of the bend that leads quickly to views of the falls from the edge of the gorge. It is also possible to access the rim of the gorge on the opposite side of the canyon by parking near the old road bridge at the bottom of the hill and following a rough path along the lagoon below the falls and up a notch in the cliffs - this ends up being a scramble of about 1/3km in length.Sveinstekksfoss is a modest waterfall along the stream Fossá just northeast of the town of Djúpivogur. The falls crash 49 feet into a narrow gorge carved into a part of the incredibly unique layered basalt flow formations which permeate this area of the island, with the stream then snaking through the narrow twisting gorge to a small lagoon at its mouth. The twisting nature of the gorge ensures that the falls cannot be seen from stream level, and must instead be viewed from the cliffs along the rim of the canyon.
