About This Waterfall
Toboggan Falls is located at the north end of Berg Lake in Mount Robson Provincial Park. From the junction of Highways 5 and 16 in Tete Jaune Cache, follow the Yellowhead Highway (16) east for 16.3 kilometers to Mount Robson Meadows and turn left onto Kinney Lake Road, then follow it to the trailhead at its end in another 2 kilometers. Expect to encounter a crowded parking area, the Berg Lake Trail is the most popular hike in the Canadian Rockies. Hike the Berg Lake Trail for 20.3 kilometers to the footbridge over Toboggan Creek, just past the Berg Lake Campground, then find the Toboggan Falls Trail branching to the left immediately after the bridge. Follow the Toboggan Falls Trail up the hillside for another one-third of a kilometer to where it starts to climb up along side of the falls. It's possible to scramble right up the smooth rocks along the falls for better views than one would be afforded from the trail - just make sure to use footwear with good grip (the rock is not particularly slick unless wet).Toboggan Falls is a long natural waterslide type cascading waterfall found just north of Berg Lake in Mount Robson Provincial Park. The falls drop a total of 284 feet, first in back-to-back 15-foot tall punchbowl type plunges in a narrow shallow canyon pockmarked with swirling potholes of water, and then sliding down in a nearly continuous waterslide for an additional 253 vertical feet. Because of the shallow pitch of the sliding portion of the falls, the total linear distance of the falls between its top and bottom is nearly 900 feet (almost 300 meters) in length. Because of this distance, its possible to scramble up the smooth bedrock along side the sliding falls and take in smaller sections individually, but the shallow grade also makes it difficult (if not impossible) to see the entire waterfall collectively). Toboggan Creek heads in a small glacier on the eastern side of Mount Anne-Alice. The volume of water present in the creek is not terribly large, but the presence of the glacier ensures a consistent flow through the summer months. During the spring freshet when the basin higher up is melting out from the winter snow pack, expect the volume of Toboggan Creek to swell considerably, however whether the falls can even be accessed early enough in the season to see such flows is not known.
