About This Waterfall
Unchalli Falls is among the most powerful waterfalls in India, beginning as a sliding series of cascades and then turning to a broad veiling horsetail type fall where the river intersects a wide cliff of diagonally stratified bedrock which causes the water to spread out over and immense width (lesser so during the dry season). The falls are commonly said to stand about 380 feet tall, however the topography available from Google Earth (as of August 2011) suggests the total height may be well over 500 feet. The falls were originally named Lushington Falls after British born J.D. Lushington, credited with discovering the falls in 1845, who worked for the district in which the falls are located. The name Keppa Falls has been used less frequently and in more recent years the falls are almost always referred to as Unchalli Falls.
