About This Waterfall

Crabtree Falls is often claimed to be the tallest waterfall east of the Mississippi River. In reality there appear to be three distinct and entirely separate sections of falls along the creek, segregated by stretches of gentler cascading stream. The Upper Falls along Crabtree Creek consists of the largest individual falls along the stream, dropping somewhere between 200 and 240 feet in a broad series of steep sliding cascades. This section of falls is often incorrectly cited as falling 400 feet. The signs along the Crabtree Falls trail distinctly call out Upper Falls and Lower Falls as destinations, so it seems likely that Upper Crabtree Falls is the proper name for this section given these circumstances.
