About This Waterfall
Snow Creek is one of the larger volume tributaries to Yosemite Valley and in following it forms one of the more significant sets of waterfalls as well. Snow Creek Falls has generally been referenced as encompassing the entire 2,000 foot-plus drop from the rim of the valley to the floor of Tenaya Canyon, however upon thorough re-examination of the course of the stream, we have determined it necessary to segregate the drop into two distinct entries in the database. The upper falls consist of a set of cascades which leads into a booming horsetail, for a total drop of about 700 feet. Following the main fall is a long, steep gully filled with large boulders where the creek loses another 800 feet in elevation, though not in a form which can be considered to be a waterfall. The final drop which the creek makes is that of Snow Creek Falls proper (see link below). Upper Snow Creek Falls cannot be seen from the floor of Tenaya Canyon and the only trail which provides vistas is the Half Dome trail. Closer views should be possible via off-trail exploration, but the terrain appears to be quite dangerous and this is not a recommended action.
