From Highway 7 in central Eidfjord, turn north onto the signed road heading to Simadalen (Route 103). Smørblindofossen can be seen for several kilometers along this road, with excellent views found from a large pullout and picnic area about 2 km from Highway 7 in Eidfjord.Åsfossen is an unofficially named waterfall which cascades down the north wall of Simadalen right at the head of the Simadalsfjorden near the tailrace for the Sima Power Station, and is one of the more noteworthy of the less significant waterfalls found in Simadalen. The falls are produced by the Aselvi as it cascades approximately 165 meters (540 feet) into a deep gully. Previously we had estimated the falls to be closer to 140 meters in height, however after evaluating one-meter topographic maps of the area, it's clear that was an underestimate.
The Aselvi originates in a basin with several small lakes and tarns, and exhibits a strong flow during the spring and early summer months. The stream is however regulated approximately 1.4km upstream from the waterfall, presumably diverted into the adjacent Sima Hydroelectric Project as so many other streams in the area are. Due to this diversion, the falls should be expected to have a considerably reduced flow once the seasonal snow pack has melted off.We should note that the stream along which this waterfall occurs has been labeled differently on maps of different scale, appearing as both Åsåna and Aselvi. We chose to utilize the latter in giving the falls a working name, but it could be known under either title.
