About This Spring

## Overview Bagby Hot Springs is one of Oregon's most beloved and iconic hot springs destinations, nestled deep within the Mount Hood National Forest in Clackamas County. Discovered in 1880 by prospector and hunter Bob Bagby, the springs have drawn visitors for well over a century. The hot water emerges at approximately 102–105°F and feeds a series of hand-crafted soaking tubs fashioned from hollowed-out old-growth logs — a rustic bathing experience unlike any other in the Pacific Northwest. The site's recorded history stretches back to 1913, when Forest Service guard Phil Putz constructed the cabin that still stands on the grounds today. In the 1920s, the facilities were expanded to house a small fire crew. A new guardhouse was built in 1974. The current bathing structures were designed and built by the Friends of Bagby, a dedicated volunteer group. After Bagby transitioned to a managed recreation site, the U.S. Forest Service took over maintenance of the hot springs and surrounding area. Bagby sits at an elevation of roughly 2,250 feet and is reached via a gentle 1.4-mile hike along Bagby Hot Springs Trail #544 through lush old-growth forest. The trail follows the scenic Collawash River and Hot Springs Fork, making the walk as rewarding as the soak itself. ## Directions Bagby Hot Springs is located southeast of Estacada, Oregon — roughly an hour's drive from town. 1. From Estacada, head southeast on OR-224 (Clackamas Highway) along the Clackamas River. 2. Continue past the Ripplebrook Guard Station (a good place to stop for information and to purchase your soaking wristband). 3. Follow Forest Road 46 south, then turn onto Forest Road 63 heading east. 4. Turn onto Forest Road 70, which leads to the Bagby Hot Springs trailhead and parking area. 5. From the trailhead, hike approximately 1.4 miles on Bagby Hot Springs Trail #544 to reach the springs. **Map Quad:** Battleax 15 (or Mount Hood National Forest Map) **GPS Coordinates:** 44.936, -122.173 **Note:** The access road may be closed or impassable during winter due to snow. The Forest Service strongly discourages attempting to reach the trailhead in snowy conditions — multiple visitors get stuck each year, requiring sheriff's assistance. There is no cell phone coverage in the Bagby area, so if you plan a winter visit, call or stop by the Ripplebrook Guard Station beforehand for current road conditions. ## What to Expect ### The Soaking Areas Bagby offers three distinct soaking options: - **Private Deck:** Five hollowed-out log tubs, each enclosed in its own room. The deck is partially covered, allowing views of the sky while keeping your belongings dry. *(Note: The Private Deck was undergoing renovation as of the original listing — check with the Forest Service for current status.)* - **Public Deck:** Three hollowed-out log bathtubs — survivors of a 1979 fire — plus one whiskey-barrel-style tub. This is a communal soaking area. - **Upper Deck:** Built by the Friends of Bagby, just steps from the Public Deck. Features a large whiskey-barrel soaking tub that can accommodate around eight people. Also a communal soak. Clothing is optional only in the private rooms. ### Fees & Rules - **Soaking fee:** $5.00 per person. Wristbands can be purchased at the Ripplebrook Guard Station with cash or credit card. There is no separate parking fee. - **Alcohol is banned.** The Forest Service implemented this restriction in 2002. - **No soap or shampoo** of any kind — including biodegradable products — may be used in the soaking tubs. This is both illegal and harmful to the natural environment. - **Pack it in, pack it out.** Bagby is a treasured natural area and sees heavy use. Please carry out all trash and belongings. ### Camping Shower Creek Campground is located just a quarter mile from the hot springs, near the trailhead. Camping is not permitted along the trail or at the hot springs themselves. - **Single sites:** $15/night - **Double occupancy sites:** $24/night - **Season:** The campground typically closes after Labor Day and reopens in April or May, depending on weather conditions. Backpack camping is also available past the hot springs and at other National Forest campgrounds in the area. ### Nearby Attractions - **Shower Creek Falls** — approximately 6 miles from Shower Creek Campground - **Silver King Lake** — approximately 6 miles from the area ### Facilities & Conditions - **Restrooms:** Pit toilet available - **Water temperature:** 102–105°F - **Water clarity:** Semi-clear - **Usage:** High — Bagby is extremely popular, especially on weekends. Arriving early or visiting midweek is recommended. - **Visibility:** Low (secluded forest setting) - **Bugs:** Moderate - **Wildlife:** Moderate - **Closest food and gas:** Estacada, OR - **Best seasons to visit:** Spring through fall. Summer and early fall offer the most reliable access and weather.
