About This Waterfall
Lincoln Brook makes several twists and turns as it cuts through a series of ledges in the Granville member of the Pinney Hollow Schist formation. The lowest and largest tier is adjacent to the old Bobbin Mill that once harnessed the waters of Lincoln Brook. It is a 19 foot plunge cutting into an incised alcove in the broad face of the ledge landing in a deep pool, just above the confluence with the Mad River. The next drop is a 9 foot sloping horsetail cascade into a shallow gorge which comes toward the trail-side vantage point in a broad sweeping S-curve. The final tier consists of a wide ledge that is covered in times of higher flow, but in lower flow, is restricted to a pair of short successive leaps into two small potholes. We asked the property owner if there was an historical name for the falls. He related that the falls are often referred to as Hartshorn Falls, named for a local family that owns land further up the valley. He said the family never owned the land around the falls however, so the naming conventions are somewhat tenuous.
