About This Waterfall
Warren Falls is located just off of Route 100 south out of Warren. Look for a large dirt pullout on the west side of the road about nine-tenths of a mile south of the Route 100 bridge over the Mad River at the south end of Warren village. A trail embarks from the right side of the pullout and follows the river downstream to the rocks along the rim of the gorge above the falls in about 600 feet. The bedrock around the falls can be quite slick when wet, so use necessary caution.Warren Falls is a low, rumbling series of cascades along the Mad River separated by a handful of incredibly clear and surprisingly deep pools. The falls are made up of three distinct tiers totaling about 20 feet in height, broken up into individual drops of about 7, 10 and 3 feet. The potholes below each of these drops make for excellent swimming holes when the river is running low enough - during any time other than the lowest flows it's much too dangerous to swim here, and there have been multiple drownings in the past. The pool at the base of the final 3 foot drop appears to be at least 20 feet deep, scoured out by the boiling hydraulic action of the water as it pours off the low lip of the rock above. The name Carleton Falls was applied to the falls in the late 1800's and early 1900's, but fell out of common usage well over 100 years ago.
