About This Spring
## Overview Hunter's Hot Springs Resort is a historic hot springs site located in Lakeview, Oregon, in the high desert of Lake County. Situated at approximately 42.22°N, 120.37°W, this geothermal spring has been a notable landmark in southern Oregon for well over a century. The hot springs in the Lakeview area are among the hottest in Oregon, with some vents historically recorded at temperatures exceeding 200°F (93°C). The geothermal activity here is tied to the region's volcanic geology along the western edge of the Basin and Range Province, where deep faulting allows superheated water to rise to the surface. The springs were historically developed into a resort destination, and the name "Hunter's" is associated with early settlers who recognized the therapeutic and commercial potential of the geothermal waters. Lakeview itself has long been known as the "Tallest Town in Oregon" due to its elevation of nearly 4,800 feet, and the hot springs have been one of the area's most distinctive natural features. Old Perpetual, a nearby geyser that once erupted continuously and was a beloved roadside attraction, is closely associated with the Hunter's Hot Springs property. Visitors should be aware that the status of the resort and public access may have changed over the years. The property has gone through various phases of ownership and operation. It is advisable to check current conditions and access policies before planning a visit. ## Directions Hunter's Hot Springs Resort is located just north of Lakeview, Oregon, along U.S. Route 395. 1. GPS coordinates: 42.220250, -120.369340. ## What to Expect The Lakeview area's geothermal features produce extremely hot water — visitors should exercise caution around any active vents or pools, as water temperatures can be scalding. The landscape surrounding the springs is characteristic of Oregon's high desert: open sagebrush terrain, wide skies, and views of surrounding fault-block mountains. Historically, the resort offered soaking pools fed by the hot springs, and the famous Old Perpetual geyser — once one of the few continuously erupting geysers in the western United States — was a major draw. The geyser's activity has varied over the decades, and it may or may not be actively erupting during your visit. The area can experience significant temperature swings between day and night, especially in spring and fall. Summers are warm and dry, while winters can be cold with occasional snow. If you're visiting from out of the area, Lakeview offers basic amenities including gas stations, restaurants, and lodging. The town is relatively remote — the nearest larger cities are Klamath Falls (about 96 miles to the west) and Bend (about 150 miles to the northwest).
