About This Waterfall
Turn off Highway 1 onto Route 206 about six kilometers west of the roundabout in Kirkjubæjarklauster, following signs pointing to Fjaðrargljufur. Follow Route 206 for 2.3km, then bear left where the road forks (the right fork becomes Route F206, which is restricted to 4wd vehicles only) and continue another bumpy kilometer to the car park at the foot of the canyon. Take the trampled trail up the grassy slopes next to the canyon, seeking out vistas wherever you please. The falls are found at an overlook about a kilometer up from the road.Mögáfoss is a low volume waterfall which can be found veiling 115 feet into the deepest part of the well known canyon Fjaðrargljufur, located within the Katla Geopark near Kirkjubæjarklauster. The falls swish down a channel in the canyon wall which appears to have been stained with minerals or sulfur, so its possible that the stream feeding the falls is fed by a spring. The drainage basin which feeds into the falls is otherwise quite small and does not otherwise appear capable of producing a very large stream. When we visited the falls in August 2014 it was flowing acceptably, and given the wet climate Iceland experiences, chances are the falls will not run dry at any time.We have not been able to find any documentation on a proper or recognized name for this waterfall, so for the time being we're referring to it after it's stream, Mögá.
