About This Waterfall

Niagara Falls is both the largest waterfall by volume in North America and is without a doubt the most well known waterfall on the planet thanks in parts to its portrayal in Hollywood, the presence of approximately 2 million people living in the Buffalo-Niagara area and the largest city in Canada being situated just less than 2 hours away. Niagara Falls receives between 14 and 20 million visitors every year (depending on the source), has probably been photographed more than any other waterfall on earth and has been the site of countless foolish feats of daring and numerous publicity stunts. The falls consist of three parts; American Falls which drops between 90 and 120 feet before cascading over a bench of boulders which have cleaved from the face of the cliff, and has a crest width of about 940 feet. Bridal Veil Falls drop about the same distance but stands only about 45 feet wide. Canadian or Horseshoe Falls which drops 167 feet and stretches just over 2700 feet in width. The Niagara River maintains a consistent flow all year long due in part to a huge hydroelectric facility which draws off over half the volume of the river.
