About This Waterfall
From the roundabout in downtown Selfoss, follow Highway 1 east towards Hvolsvöllur for 18km, then turn right (south) onto Route 302 (Urriðafossvegur) just before crossing the bridge over the Þjórsá - the sign points to Urriðafoss). Continue another 2km, then turn left where the sign indicates the parking area for the falls. A short trail leads to a viewpoint overlooking the falls (though it can be seen from the parking area).Urriðafoss is one of the largest waterfalls by volume in Iceland, but with a drop of only 12 feet, it is hardly an impressive site compared to the country's other large-volume waterfalls like Dettifoss and Gullfoss. The falls stretch across an expanse of the Þjórsá separated by several small islands. The majority of the river funnels into a narrow chute in the middle of the river, with the near bank featuring more of a stair-step type drop. Currently a proposal exists to build a 130 MW hydroelectric generating station at Urriðafoss which would result in the waterfall becoming substantially reduced in volume (if it even survives the construction process). The name of this waterfall translated to english is Salmon Falls.
