About This Waterfall

From Roseburg take OR-138 east to the town of Glide, and turn south on the signed Little River Road. Follow the Little River Road for 25.8 miles to the Lake-in-the-Woods campground, the entrance for which will be on the right side of the road. Directly opposite the campground entrance is the trailhead for Yakso Falls. The trail winds amongst towering Evergreens, lacy Vine Maples and wild Rhododendrons to the base of the falls in an easy seven-tenths of a mile of hiking.Yakso Falls is one of the more prominent waterfalls found within the Little River drainage outside of the town of Glide, as well as the largest waterfall located along the Little River. The falls drop 60 feet over an interestingly sculpted cliff which causes the river to veil into a classic Fan shape in a very unique way as it tumbles down the bulging cliff face which features several distinct "knobs" which bulge outward and cause the water to part on either sides, creating mini veils within the overall form of the falls. Because of the way the bulging cliff distributes the water, the appearance of the waterfall varies considerably depending on what angle it is viewed from. The Little River is a small to moderate sized stream at this point along its length, draining from a basin covering approximately 4.4 square miles in area. Because the entirety of this basin is located above 3,000 feet above sea level, it does receive a significant amount of snow in the winter months, and as a result the flow of the river will typically swell considerably in the spring and become reduced slowly during the first half of the summer. By late summer the volume is expected to be notably reduced but not to the point where the appearance of the waterfall is negatively impacted.Yakso is a Chinook Jargon word meaning "hair", which is clearly a nod to the very hair-like appearance of the falls during periods of lower flow.
