About This Waterfall

Johnston Canyon is located 17 ½ kilometers west of the eastern terminus of the Bow Valley Parkway (a total of about 20 kilometers from downtown Banff). The falls are found about 2-1/2 km from the trailhead, just before the spur trail leading to the base of Upper Johnston Canyon Falls. In between Lower and Upper Johnston Canyon Falls lie three obscurely named but heavily photographed waterfalls along Johnston Creek. This is the last of the three that is encountered, located about 2-1/2 kilometers from the trailhead. The falls are about 10 meters tall, cascading over sloped, stairstep bedrock before plunging over an undercut ledge into a narrow grotto. Just below the falls, the creek bends sharply around an outcrop, creating a very scenic portion of the canyon. We had previously listed this waterfall as Cavern Falls having not come across any names for it. However information has come to light that indicates it was once prominently known as Marguerite Falls, named after Marguerite Camp, one of the former owners of Johnston Canyon who constructed the initial trail up the canyon. The falls were apparently labeled by name by signs along the trail until some time in the 1970s.
