About This Waterfall
Johnston Canyon is located 17 ½ kilometers west of the eastern terminus of the Bow Valley Parkway (a total of about 20 kilometers from downtown Banff). The falls are found 1.5 km from the trailhead. In between Lower and Upper Johnston Canyon Falls lie three obscurely named, but heavily photographed waterfalls along Johnston Creek, Tunnel Falls is the first of those three falls encountered. The falls are about 30 feet tall, dropping over 5 foot and 25 foot ledges in succession, with part of the stream falling through a natural bridge in the lower ledge, causing it to appear as if it were spewing out from the side of the cliff. The 'tunnel' has occasionally been known to become clogged and stop flowing for short periods when storms wash logs and debris downstream, but it rarely remains so.Unline Stella Falls found further upstream, we are not aware of this waterfall holding any historical name. Apparently the locals have referred to it as Tunnel Falls for many years.
